So, America…where ya from?

When one stops and thinks about it, the word America doesn’t exactly run smoothly off the tongue.  No, no, I’m not taking any sort of political slant so just simmer down.  I mean the word itself.  Ameeeerica…Amuuurica.  Nope, doesn’t smoothly resonate.  Other countries perhaps? France…no, sounds like someone can’t say dance.  Italy? Too many opportunities to put the emphasis on the wrong syllable. Russia? What’s the hurry?

But where did we get the name America? Turns out it’s from a fifteenth century explorer, and mapmaker and journal writer named Amerigo Vespucci, or more appropriately a gaggle of German Scholars (and don’t get me started on those wild and wacky German Scholars, particularly after some peppermint Schnapps) who wrote that it was Amerigo that “discovered” Amer…oops…huh…the land west of Europe and Africa and the name “America” just stuck.  Of course, some would argue (rather successfully I would add) that neither Amerigo nor Columbus “discovered” America (particularly those Native Americans who were already here and helped tie the boats up to the dock), but the fact that he gets naming rights for two continents just for being a writer makes me think about things a little bit differently…

Hmm, Alanerica…Reesia…The Alan Tundra by Reese Creek. The Reesian Isthmus? Kinda rolls of the tongue doesn’t it?

Greetings blog wanderers and seekers of truth, or whatever truth appears to be from the mind of a warped individual. You have reached the inner sanctum of some guy named Alan. Having graduated college sometime shortly after the Earth cooled, he finds himself in his late 30's and working out in the real world. His humor is dry and his outlook not so serious and somehow has picked up the nasty habit of writing about himself in the third person. He is married with child and loves his family, sports and, of course, his beloved video games...likelihood of his growing up? Not good. Are you an established site or magazine looking for a writer? Drop me a line if you are interested.
